What is the scientific/proper name for 'suckerfish' fish?

I don't know, I think I should but hey I can't walk into the pet shop and ask for a suckerfish can I?

What is the scientific/proper name for 'suckerfish' fish?
There are plecostomous (usually called plecos), Chinese algae eaters, Siamese algae eaters, and Otocinclus catfish (otos). Some other catfish (Farowella, for one) called "suckermouth" catfish. These vary in adult size from one and a half inches to eighteen inches, so choose the best for the tank size you have. Chinese algae eaters, don't do that great of a job - they only eat algae when they're young - so I wouldn't suggest getting these.
Reply:Pocostomous?

Definitely creative spelling used here... That is rather phonetic...

I think it's either that or Plecostomus fish? Not sure?

I used to have a big one named Larry Bud Melman...
Reply:Most people refer to the "Plecostomus" when they say "suckerfish".

But there are others such as the Chinese Algae Eater, Siamese Algae Eater, Flying Fox and the Otocinclus... If you have a tropical setup, the Otocinclus would be better because they only grow to 2 inches. I have an Otocinclus with my tropical fish, and they do a pretty good job. The common Plecostomus grows to 2 feet, so you can get a dwarf version of the Plecostomus such as the Clown Pleco which grows to 6 inches. I have one with my goldfish... good luck %26lt;:0)

Ps. Aglae Eaters can only eat soft algae anyway. it's easier to just scrub it off with a sponge...
Reply:Depends on what you are looking for. Plecostomus (sp?) are pretty common aquarium fish and have a sucker mouth, but there many others. I have a Chinese Algae Eater that has a sucker mouth as does Siamese Algae Eaters. I've seen some that were called a type of catfish with what looked like a sucker mouth even though they have little "barbells" around there mouth that they use to pick up the food off the bottom. You will find that some pet stores mislabel their fish as well either through ignorance or intentionally attempting to fool people(not a common practice, just be careful).
Reply:I believe the species you are referring to is a plecostamus. There are a few different varieties.
Reply:i just purchased a sucker fish from a pet store, and i asked for a sucker fish. believe me the people who work at the pet stores do not know the scientific name for a sucker fish.
Reply:like an algae eater? "pleco" or the scientific name plecostomus
Reply:It's a plecostomus. Pronounced pluh-cost-toe-mus. It's a brown sucker-mouth that eats most brown and green algae. They're relatively inexpensive and live quite some time. They are mild in manor and will only grow as big as your fish tank. They stay within relative size of their habitat. Good luck!
Reply:Just ask for a Pleco.
Reply:It's called plecostomus. Pleco for short.
Reply:depends on the type....the large almost sharke looking black or spoted ones are pleco's i know that....i had one...
Reply:He goes by various names in different parts of the country, and frequents almost every stream and lake, large or small, throughout the Union. There is a kind of black sucker, taken in Lake Erie, which goes by the name of the shoemaker. A red-tail sucker in some of the Western rivers is called the red horse. A long species of sucker in the Ohio river is called the carp - an excellent fish. In the Delaware river the sucker has larger scales than those caught elsewhere.

hope this helps.
Reply:pleckostumus not sure how you spell it
