There is a scientific name for this brain phenomenon, can anyone help me?

When someone asks you a question and you say What? and then answer them in the same breath. My psychology teacher in high school told us this is a function of the brain where information is recycled and even though we might not have heard it right away the brain picks up on the "echo" so to speak and comprehends it. What is this called it's bugging the crap out of me that i can't recall what it's called.

It's called, quite simply, automatic processing (as opposed to controlled processing). It is a process where the brain has already registered the information and gathered a response without you being aware of it.
Reply:I didn't realize there was a name for it, but my husband does that to me all the time and sometimes I want to whack him a good one upside the lookers.
Reply:Hi,

i call it annoying.

but, it's probably what the first answerer said.
Reply:Delayed processing?
