What is the scientific name for marsupial and how did this name come about?
The scientific name is Marsupiala from the Order Marsupiala.





The name is Latin from Marsupium meaning "pouch"








Any decent dictionary should be able to tell you this if you need a reference.

a mammalian group characterized by premature birth and continued development of the newborn while attached to the nipples on the lower belly of the mother. The pouch, or marsupium, from which the group takes its name, is a flap of skin covering the nipples.
