Can a scientific name have more then two words in it?

It's for a project, due tomorrow please answer.

Can a scientific name have more then two words in it?
Well I would say yes, but according to the BINOMENIAL NOMENCLATURE, it is a two word naming system it really only has to have 2. Which is the genus, where it came from and the species what it looks like or who discovered it.
Reply:Yes, names go:

Kingdom--%26gt; Phylum--%26gt; Class--%26gt; Order--%26gt;

Family--%26gt; Genus--%26gt; Species--%26gt; Subspecies
Reply:Yes. Animals all have a two part name, Orcinus Orca is the name of a killer whale. This is called Binomial nomenclature and it is latin.

"The Genus (or surname) as a general rule starts with a capital letter while the Specific name (or personal name) is written completely in lower case"

Hope this helps you

Does anyone know the scientific name for allergies please?

I've been researching for quite a while but i can't seem fo find it. Any help is appreciated thanks. Also does anyone know a specific name for asthma. thanks

Does anyone know the scientific name for allergies please?
Hi,

I do not think there are scientific names in the form of a "translation" as you seem to be requesting. Rather, allergy is more of a general term that is defined in terms of immunological response - how your body reacts when it encounters invaders, and asthma is defined by it's symptoms - as "a chronic inflammatory disease of the airway" according to the source noted.

Here is a very interesting article on the definition of allergy with LOTS of information on immunological responses and how the definition of allergies has changed over time. This article is more specific to food allergy. I have bookmarked it myself for further reading.

Swiftlet

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Cave Swiftlets

Scientific classification

Kingdom: Animalia

Phylum: Chordata

Class: Aves

Order: Apodiformes

Family: Apodidae

Genera

Hydrochous

Collocalia

Aerodramus

Schoutedenapus

The birds called Swiftlets or Cave Swiftlets are contained within the four genera Aerodramus, Hydrochous, Schoutedenapus and Collocalia. They form the Collocaliini tribe within the swift family Apodidae. The group contains around thirty species mostly confined to southern Asia, south Pacific islands, and northeastern Australia, all within the tropical and subtropical regions. They are in many respects typical members of the Apodidae, having narrow wings for fast flight, with a wide gape and small reduced beak surrounded by bristles for catching insects in flight. What distinguishes many but not all species from other swifts and indeed almost all other birds [1] is their ability to use a simple but effective form of echolocation to navigate in total darkness through the chasms and shafts of the caves where they roost at night and breed. The nests of some species are collected for the famous Chinese delicacy Bird's nest soup.

Authentic bird's nest soup is made from nests of some species of swiftlet, mainly the Edible-nest (or White-nest) swiftlet (Aerodramus fuciphagus) and the Black-nest Swiftlet. Instead of twigs, feathers and straw, these swiftlets make their nest only from strands of their gummy saliva, which harden when exposed to air. Once the nests are harvested, they are cleaned and sold to restaurants. Eating swiftlet nest material is believed to help maintain skin tone, balance qi ("life energy") and reinforce the immune system. It is also thought to strengthen the lungs and prevent coughs, improve the constitution and prolong life. Research shows that every 100 g of dry nest contains 49.9 g of water-soluble protein (including amido nitrogen, monoamine nitrogen, non-amino nitrogen, arginine, humin, histidine, lysine and cysteine), 30.6 g carbohydrate (glycoprotein and mucin), 4.9 g iron, 2.5 g inorganic salt (including potassium, sodium, calcium, magnesium, sulfur, phosphorus, silica and other trace elements), and 1.4 g fiber (Dictionary of Traditional Chinese Medicine, The History of Chinese Medicine and the Nutrition Table).

The energy contained in 100 g of swiftlet nest is 345 kcal. The nests are often served simmered in chicken broth.

Authentic bird's nest soup is quite popular throughout Asia. It is also extremely expensive; many western restaurants serve a less expensive version consisting of soup with noodles shaped to resemble a bird's nest.

The most heavily harvested nests are from the White-nest swiftlet (Aerodramus fuciphagus) and the Black-nest swiftlet (Aerodramus maximus)[3]. The white nests and the “red blood” nests are supposedly rich in nutrients which are traditionally believed to provide health benefits, such as aiding digestion, raising libido, improving the voice, alleviating asthma, increasing concentration, and an overall benefit to the immune system.[2]

What are the scientific name for the Black Panther and Weasel?

The weasel is Mustela nivalis.

There is no actual species called a black panther, it's just the name commonly given to melanistic leopards - that is, leopards with an excess of the dark pigment melanin, resulting in an almost totally black coat (the markings still show up against the background in certain lights). The scientific name of the leopard is Panthera pardus. Some people also refer to melanistic jaguars as panthers, though this is not technically correct. The scientific name of the jaguar is Panthera onca.

Panther or black panther is not to be confused with Florida panther - this is the name often given to the subspecies of puma found in Florida, though it is just as accurate to call it puma, cougar, mountain lion, etc. When referring to this animal you should always say FLORIDA panther, not just 'panther', to avoid confusion with a melanistic leopard or jaguar. The scientific name of the puma is Puma concolor, and the Florida subspecies is Puma concolor coryi.

What are the scientific name for the Black Panther and Weasel?
Black panther is not a distinct species but just a common name for a black specimen (melanistic variant) of several species of cats belonging to the genus panthera.

Weasel - genus Mustela of the Mustelidae family
Reply:Mustela nivalis is the weasle and the Black panther is Panthera onca.
Reply:Well, I don't know about the weasel, but a black panther is actually just a melanistic jaguar.
Reply:black panther is panthera onca

and weasel is mustella sibirica

What is the scientific name for cellulitis?

im doing a project for science and i need to know what the scientific name for cellulitis is. PLEASE HELP!

What is the scientific name for cellulitis?
Cellulitis IS the scientific name for the inflammation of connective tisue == Read further ===

Cellulitis is an inflammation of the connective tissue underlying the skin, that can be caused by a bacterial infection.

Cellulitis can be caused by normal skin flora or by exogenous bacteria, and often occurs where the skin has previously been broken: cracks in the skin, cuts, blisters, burns, insect bites, surgical wounds, or sites of intravenous catheter insertion.

The mainstay of therapy remains treatment with appropriate antibiotics. Skin on the face or lower legs is most commonly affected by this infection, though cellulitis can occur on any part of the body.

Cellulitis may be superficial 鈥?affecting only the surface of the skin 鈥?but cellulitis may also affect the tissues underlying the skin and can spread to the lymph nodes and bloodstream.

Cellulitis is unrelated to cellulite, a cosmetic condition featuring dimpling of the skin.

What is the scientific name of Nitrogen trioxide?

robert,

There is no such compound as nitrogen trioxide. The molecular compound that some are quoting in their answers, N2O3, has the scientific name dinitrogen trioxide. Having the word "nitrogen" at the beginning of the name implies that there is only one N atom in the compound, which is not the case. The other formula people are quoting, NO3, does not exist as a compound. There is, however, an ion with a -1 charge with this formula, called the "nitrate" ion.

Aaaaaah.... I have just looked up N2O3 on the web and there are actually a few manufacturers of the chemical that call it "nitrogen trioxide". I can see where the confusion comes from. Just know that this name is wrong, and the real name is dinitrogen trioxide.

What is the scientific name of Nitrogen trioxide?
NO3. 1 nitrogen molecule, 3 oxygen molecules

Is there a scientific name for assumptionitis?

I made up an illness, and I want to know if it has a real name. I know that everyone has fallen victim to assuming something. But is there a scientific name for making assumptions? There are a lot of crazy scientific terms, so I'm sure there is one for this! Please only leave serious answers, and give me a source too! Thanks

Is there a scientific name for assumptionitis?
Probably not going to get a lot of answers with this in the Botany section, plants don't assume much.

I have heard of 'Intern's Disease', where doctors who are learning start to see symptoms of whatever they are currently studying in themselves. That's not a scientific name though.

There is Hypochondria, a psychological disorder where you think you have illnesses and diseases you do not.

There is Munchhausen's, which is the scientific name even, where you attribute diseases and symptoms to yourself for attention from others. (and sometimes inflict damage on yourself to require medical attention).

There are probably more but that's all I can think of. I think Hypochondria is pretty close to what you are describing.

Hope that helped.

Which of the following tells how to write a scientific name?

Which of the following tells how to write a scientific name?

A. The genus name is always capitalized.

B. The species name is always capitalized.

C. The genus name is NOT capitalized.

D. The species name is NOT capitalized.

E. Both names are written in italics or underlined

Which of the following tells how to write a scientific name?
The closest answer is A as far as capitals go: The first letter of the genus is a capital letter.

HOWEVER... if the name is in printed text in a book or article or scientific paper the whole name ( genus and species) is also in italics. If you are writing it down in your own handwriting the whole name (genus and species) is underlined.

Also, the first time you write out the name it must be in full e.g.Escherichia coli thereafter you can just call it E. coli.
Reply:for example, humans belong to genus Homo and species sapiens. Humans are then classified by Linnaeus as Homo sapiens. Note that the first name, genus, begins with a capital letter, while the second with a small letter and both words are written in italics or underlined

So...A D and E are correct options

zoological
Reply:There is no opposite to botanical which refers to plant life. There are several kingdoms which you may be referring too.I n biological taxonomy, a kingdom or regnum is a taxon in either the highest rank, or (in the new three-domain system) the rank below domain. Each kingdom is divided into smaller groups called phyla. Currently, textbooks from the United States use a system of six kingdoms (Animalia, Plantae, Fungi, Protoctista, Archaea, and Monera), while British and Australian textbooks describe five kingdoms (Animalia, Plantae, Fungi, Protista, Bacteria).

What is the common and scientific name for arthritis?

There are different forms of arthritis; each has a different cause. The most common form of arthritis, osteoarthritis (degenerative joint disease) is a result of trauma to the joint, infection of the joint, or age. Emerging evidence suggests that abnormal anatomy might contribute to the early development of osteoarthritis[citation needed]. Other arthritis forms are rheumatoid arthritis and psoriatic arthritis, autoimmune diseases in which the body attacks itself. Septic arthritis is caused by joint infection. Gouty arthritis is caused by deposition of uric acid crystals in the joint, causing inflammation. There is also an uncommon form of gout caused by the formation of rhomboid crystals of calcium pyrophosphate. This gout is known as pseudogout.

How does a scientific name appear when written?

In addition to mentioned above, once you have written a species name in a paper/essay, you can then abbreviate it (still in italics):

H. sapiens

This comes in handy when writing about multiple different species.

And as for subspecies, still in italics:

Canis lupus familiaris

Which abbreviates to:

C. l. familiaris

If writing it out, instead of typing, then underline it. It's a bit hard to italicise handwriting :P

How does a scientific name appear when written?
It is written as "genus species" but must be italicized, and never capitalized

Ex: homo sapien (But italicized)

What is the scientific Name for red tide, and where does it happen?

If you have sites, concerning red tide please, post them. it's for a project and, well, I need to know

What is the scientific Name for red tide, and where does it happen?
In the trade its referred to as an HAB--Harmful Alge Bloom. Occasionally, the algae grow very fast or "bloom" and accumulate into dense, visible patches near the surface of the water. "Red Tide" is a common name for such a phenomenon where certain phytoplankton species contain reddish pigments and "bloom" such that the water appears to be colored red. The term "red tide" is thus a misnomer because they are not associated with tides; they are usually not harmful; and those species that are harmful may never reach the densities required to discolor the water.

Unfortunately, a small number of species produce potent neurotoxins that can be transfered through the food web where they affect and even kill the higher forms of life such as zooplankton, shellfish, fish, birds, marine mammals, and even humans that feed either directly or indirectly on them.

What is the scientific name for moss?

I am trying to find a type of mosses' scientific name and so i was wondering if anyone knew thr scientific name of moss

What is the scientific name for moss?
moss, any species of the class Bryopsida, in which the liverworts are sometimes included. Mosses and liverworts together comprise the division Bryophyta, the first green land plants to develop in the process of evolution. It is believed that they evolved from certain very primitive vascular plants and have not given rise to any other type of plant. Their rootlike rhizomes and leaflike processes lack the vascular structure (xylem and phloem) of the true roots, stems, and leaves found in higher plants. Although limited to moist habitats because they require water for fertilization, bryophytes are usually extremely hardy and grow everywhere except in the sea. Mosses, the more complex class structurally, usually grow vertically rather than horizontally, like the liverworts. The green moss plant visible to the naked eye, seldom over 6 in. (15.2 cm) in height, is the gametophyte generation (see reproduction). Except for the commercially valuable sphagnum or peat moss, mosses are of little direct importance to humans. They are of some value in soil formation and filling in of barren habitats (e.g., dried lakes) prior to the growth of higher plants and also provide food for certain animals. Unrelated plants sharing the name moss include the club moss, flowering moss, or pyxie (of the diapensia family), Irish moss, or carrageen (see algae), reindeer moss (a lichen), and Spanish moss. Mosses are classified in the division Bryophyta, class Bryopsida.
Reply:There are many different kinds of mosses but they belong to a division called bryophytes.

James Bond (January 4, 1900 鈥?February 14, 1989) was a leading American ornithologist whose name was appropriated by writer Ian Fleming for his fictional spy James Bond.

The real Bond was born in Philadelphia and worked as an ornithologist at the Academy of Natural Sciences in that city, rising to become curator of birds there. He was an expert in Caribbean birds and wrote the definitive book on the subject: Birds of the West Indies, first published in 1936 and, in its fifth edition, still in print (ISBN 0-618-00210-3).

Ian Fleming, who was a keen bird watcher living in Jamaica, was familiar with Bond's book, and chose the name of its author for the hero of Casino Royale in 1953, apparently because he wanted a name that sounded 'as ordinary as possible'. Fleming wrote to the real Bond's wife, "It struck me that this brief, unromantic, Anglo-Saxon and yet very masculine name was just what I needed, and so a second James Bond was born." In the twentieth James Bond film, Die Another Day, Pierce Brosnan, playing the fictional Bond, can be seen examining the book Birds of the West Indies in an early scene that takes place in Havana, Cuba. Bond won the Institute of Jamaica's Musgrave Medal in 1952; the Brewster Medal of the American Ornithologists Union in 1954; and the Leidy Medal of the Academy of Natural Sciences in 1975.

He died in the Chestnut Hill Hospital in Philadelphia at age 89.

Can someone tell me the symptoms of kidney cancer? What is the scientific name of kidney cancer?

When I have questions about cancer I go to the internet and type in example.....Cancer of the kidneys/signs and symptons...and the info will pop up. Try it.

Can someone tell me the symptoms of kidney cancer? What is the scientific name of kidney cancer?
The most common type of Kidney cancer in Renal Cell Carcinoma (Hypernephroma) 80% of all adult kidney cancers. There are others, some children get Wilms Tumor. I was dianosed with RCC in June 2000, and with metastatic disease (moved to my lungs) in October 2001. Alpha iterferon and IL II therapy knocked a lot of it down, then RF ablation knocked what was left back even further. Now I am on angiogenesis inhibitors and doing well, the impact on my life is minimal.
Reply:"Renal Cell Carcinoma"

It is characterized by a lack of early warning signs.

Renal cell carcinoma may remain clinically occult for most of its course. The classic triad of flank (side) pain, hematuria (blood in the urine), and flank mass is uncommon (10%) and is indicative of advanced disease. 25 to 30 percent of patients are asymptomatic, and their renal cell carcinomas are found on incidental radiologic study.
Reply:kidney cancer is renal cell carcinoma which is the most common form. Mum was diagnosed last may with it. When discovered it had spread to her liver and lung. She had NO symptoms except 3 'bleeds' in her urine two weeks prior to diagnosis. It was stage 4, incurable she pasted away 4 months later aged 60.

Can anyone state two advantages of using a scientific name to identify organisms?

1. it allows for scientists to distinguish one organism from another

2. it can also tell someone a lot about an organism (where it's from, what it does, etc)

Can anyone state two advantages of using a scientific name to identify organisms?
Using a scientific name to identify organisms has many advantages. It helps classify life into groups of subordinate to more comprehensive groups. This scheme of classification makes it easier to identify different organisms and other organisms they are similar with. By using a scientific name you could also tell a little bit about them ...for an example: yellow-headed blackbirds, whose scientific name is Xanthocephalus xanthocephalus, which literally means "yellow-headed, yellow head."

all in all, Scientific names are designed to tell you something about the animal's relationships with other animals. These names are also important because they allow people throughout the world to communicate unambiguously about animal species. Scientific names are often descriptive suggesting something about the animal.
Reply:Scientific names are unambiguous and universal. For example: buzzard. I'm a birder in the US - for me, a buzzard would either be a turkey vulture or black vulture. In the UK, a buzzard would be what I would call a hawk. What they call hawks in the UK, I would call an accipiter. And North American vultures have nothing to do with Old World vultures. We have blackbirds here in the US, but they're icterids (related to New World orioles); blackbirds in Europe are thrushes related to the North American robin, which is totally unrelated to the European robin (much less the even more distantly related Australian robins); and European orioles are unrelated to those found in the Western Hemisphere.

"Buzzard" can be misleading. "Cathartes" and "Buteo" are not.

You get the idea.
Reply:One advantage is that it cuts down on confusion. This happens in botany a lot, for example. What they call a plant in one place could be different from another area. If you use the proper "scientific" name, everyone knows what they're talking about. (Like, carnations are "dianthus"). Same thing with a disease, like German measles. Call it rubella and any doctor anywhere knows what you mean.

I can't think of a second advantage. It's really done for consistency.
Reply:I can think of one...

with a classification system an organism's name will not be subject to the different names placed upon it by other groups. So it gives it a uniform code...think of mountain lion and cougar...they are the same thing but it has only one scientific name.

Another might be...

It shows the relations that organism may have with other organisms...sort of like a family tree...
Reply:Latin names are often very long and difficult to learn. However once you've mastered it, if in a hurry you had to mention an organism to someone, using the Latin name would be much quicker than trying to describe it.

That's all I can think of - other than it makes you look smart =P
Reply:They are universal so when talking about an animal to a group of scientists in another country they will all know which one your talking about.

How do grammatostomias flagellibarba [scientific name]reproduce?

They are also known as Dragonfish which use their lights (called bio-luminescence) created by specialized organs on the body (photophores) to communicate w/ other fish. They can lure in mates or prey and they help to scare predators away.

They are in the family Stomiidae which are generally egg layers. After fertilized the eggs float to the surface where the larva metamorphosis in young adult form and then descend into the depths of the ocean. I'm not sure if we've determined if this species is born male and female; however, some stomiiformes are born male and change sex later in life.

How do grammatostomias flagellibarba [scientific name]reproduce?
They use photophores, organs which are created by bacterial symbiotic relationship to produce light, that attracts mates.

What is the scientific name for snoring, a sleep disorder ?

Not all snoring is caused by obstructive sleep apnea, but that is the most common cause of really loud snoring. It is a serious disorder which can cause heart damage and eventually kill the snorer. Anyone who snores a lot should get a sleep study done, as apnea is easily treated by the use of a CPAP machine, but these have to be individually set for the correct pressure to stop a person's apnea/snoring, so you can't just buy one - you MUST go to a sleep clinic and get a prescription - too little pressure will not stop the snoring/apnea, and too much can cause other serious problems.

Sleep apnea is NOT always weight related.

Can you be addicted to being addicted to stuff? is there a scientific name for it?

i think i have an addiction to just being addicted. Like, at one point i was addicted to myspace. But when i decidwd i no longer NEEDED to be on it. I shook and cried because i NEEDED to have something to obsess over.

Can you be addicted to being addicted to stuff? is there a scientific name for it?
Yes

There is such a thing as an addictive personality.

If you have this type of personality it is easy for you to become addicted to addictive substances, food, habits and even to certain people.

Google: addictive personality

it is a real eye opener.
Reply:An "addictiver personality" is a trait-yes, but I would look more at the word 'obsession'. OCD basically says that you have an "obsession" to do a certain thing that would be called a "compulsion".

It sounds like you just obsess on things easily or you have many obsessions.

If it really bothers you here are somethings that might help.

The best way to treat this is to set limits for yourself. So if you know you love myspace-which is totally fine-set a limit for yourself and say, 'Ok, I;m going to get on myspace for 20 minutes and then I'm going to ___________." Make sure you think of an actual task to do when you are done so that you have something you need to get to.

If you find this hard to stick to, set small goals with little things that aren't obsessions to you. Like if you read the paper, practice by setting a time limit on that.

You can even set a timer if that helps to remind you because sometimes when we get obsessed with things we lose track of the world outside! :)

Let me know if you want some other ideas to help.
Reply:i dont think its an addiction to being addicted, i think its more an obsessive personality. im like that too, theres always something im completely obsessed with and can hardly even think about anything other than that
