This BLACK STONE is the one that used in MECCA and some manufacturers used this in making home decors.
What is the scientific name of black stone? It is one kind of the stones.?
"The Black Stone has been described variously as basalt lava, an agate, a piece of natural glass or 鈥?most popularly 鈥?a stony meteorite. It is evidently a hard rock, having survived so much handling. A significant clue to its nature is provided by an account of the stone's recovery in 951 AD after it had been stolen 21 years earlier; according to a chronicler, the stone was identified by its ability to float in water. If this account is accurate, it would rule out the stone being an agate, basalt lava or stony meteorite, though it would be compatible with it being glass or pumice."
I'd really have to see and touch the stone myself to be more certain. Other possibilities include amphibolite and pyroxenite that are quite popular in use as polished dimension stone. These two rock types are even denser than basalt and wouldn't float on lava much less in water.
However, the wear on the stone depicted by wikipedia is more suggestive of iron rich material or perhaps glass than agate, basalt or especially pumice. Dulling with time is typical of base metals. Pumice is highly vesicular and cannot shine. Basalt polished in weather is typically granular beneath the polish. Agate has evident colour banding. Even sard, although the right colour for the rock in the wikipedia photogragh, is far too hard and not reactive enough to wear in the way the stone depicted has. Tektites (glass rich impact artifacts) are typically round but the ones I've seen are much smaller. Glass is also much more prone to etching and chemical wear than materials like basalt and agate.
Amber is the only material that can display the colour and polish of this stone (as per wikipedia photogragh) *and* float although only on salt water. Unlike all the other rock types mentioned, amber is a poorer conductor of heat and so feels relatively warm to the touch when kept in the shade. If anyone knows someone who has touched the Black Stone, it is worth asking whether it felt warm or cold to the touch...

muslims dont pray to the black stone! we pray towards the kaaba houe of allah we pray in that direction to god (allah)(swt) he ordered us to pray in that direction to him not to the black stone. Report Abuse
Reply:Well, I admit, I guessed it to be a meteorite or impact glass fragment. But if pictures of the Black Stone is compared with the actual meteorite fragments in the area, it is hard to believe it. Look at the pictures. No way is it a meteorite or impact fragment.
So dig deeper...
The Black Stone in Mecca was special during ancient times. OK so take a look at what ancient people did with stones...
Knowledge of stones was handed down to the Greeks and Romans by the Egyptians. The Egyptians used such stones in many of their important buildings and tombs. Minero-chemical studies have determined them to belong to the group "Bekhen Stone," or "Basanites." The Greeks called it "Lithos Basanites" and "Basanos." The Romans called it Lapis Basanites"
It is found in the North and Central sector of the Egyptian Eastern Desert. It is a metamorphic blend of volcanic and sedimentary materials. Its color ranges from dark green to dark grey and black. It is a very hard rock. The Egyptians used it for sarcophguses, courtly stony portraits, stelae and precious furnishings. It has had value for thousands of years.
:-D Ah ha. Color and historical value matches. So, I would guess:
The Black Stone in Mecca is a dark green to black Bekhen Stone. It is known that it had been revered long before it was incorporated into the rituals of Islam.
Reply:volcanic glass....thats what my friend reckons
Reply:The black stone in the Caba in Mecca is a meteorite. Mohammed smashed all the idols, but he spared the meteorite. Supposedly it is not an idol because it came from heaven; so when Muslims pray to it five times a day, that is not idol worship. Get real!
